Other Childbirth-Specific Issues Related to Hospital Safety
Many people are asking the question, "Is it safer to keep the babies in the rooms with their mothers rather than in the well-baby nursery?" In my opinion it's not. The purpose of having a nursery is to give the mother at least one day to recover from the effects of childbirth. Mothers after delivery are recovering from an exhausting episode with surgery in some cases, and they need rest. The baby is not going to give his or her mother any time off. Thus the well-baby nursery is a better place for the baby at least for the first day of life. It is up to the nursing staff to make it safe. Every hospital providing maternity services must have certain safeguards for the newborns and their mothers against the spread of infection, falls, kidnapping, and bringing home the wrong baby. |
