An Experienced Nurse
First, it is in the standard patient's bill of rights that you are entitled to competent care provided by qualified personnel. Registered nurses in charge of your needs have a certain amount of autonomy in exercising clinical judgment to the extent that they are supposed to observe for any changes in your condition and report those to your attending physician or the physician's designee (usually a resident, house physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner). Therefore, you have a right to expect the nurse to have a certain amount of experience. A minimum of one year would be reasonable. A nurse with less time on the job would also be acceptable as long as there is a buddy system that pairs off the neophyte with a seasoned veteran. |
