Zero Tolerance for Bedsores - Conclusion
There must be zero tolerance for bedsores. The accepted standard is to evaluate every patient every day as to the risk of developing pressure ulcers and to perform all preventive measures required for patients in jeopardy of losing their skin integrity. As a nurse, I find it difficult to admit that the nursing profession has failed in its duty to protect its hospital and nursing home clients from skin breakdown. It would be much easier to say that bedsores are not always preventable. However, unless the patient records can demonstrate that the ulcer occurred despite carrying out all reasonable preventive measures, institutionalized negligence remains the root cause of the epidemic. Don't let that happen to anyone you care about. |
